Whether it be an escape to warmer weather or your own cozy bed, college students are looking forward to a week-long break from responsibility. This final vacation before the last few weeks of the school year provides a final relief before we really close up shop and have to think about summer internships or what classes to take next year. Spring break is highly anticipated for multiple reasons, and as it draws near, there are some telltale signs all over campus that SB draws near.
1. Loss of motivation
It seems like the work really begins to pile up right when we're all ready to leave. Papers, midterms and presentations are assigned, and we are forced to ignore the thoughts of sitting around all day, using our laptops for Netflix-watching, not researching. However, the thought of a week of no responsibility really causes us to debate whether or not to actually apply ourselves when doing our assignments. Productivity grinds to a halt and the thought of flipping through a textbook as opposed to a swimsuit catalogue is unimaginable. We debate whether the work will actually get done or if we'll just give up before then.
2. Picky Eating
As much as we all love our cafeteria food, nothing beats a home-cooked meal. Students find themselves picking at the same food they've been eating for weeks, while visions of pot roast and spaghetti dance in their heads. While the occasional trip off-campus to a local eatery is appreciated, college kids are craving something fresh from the oven and made with love.
3. Piles of laundry waiting to be done
The promise of returning home soon causes a lot of motivation to decrease, mostly due to the fact that when you arrive home, your parents will pick up some of the responsibility for you. Specifically, you probably won't have to do your own laundry. The idea of spending any money on washing your clothes when you can get it done for free in a few days pretty much erases any intention of hauling that heavy bag down and up stairs, pouring out detergent and paying to sit an hour or two. So you wear the same pair of jeans three days in a row and hope you don't run out of clean underwear.
4. The sight of any dog sends your heart racing
Let's face it; The thing we miss most from home is our dog. While your mom has kept you updated with the occasional picture and glance of a tail wag while you FaceTime her, you miss cuddling with your best friend. You cannot wait to be greeted enthusiastically by your furry friend and spend time with your pets. It's gotten to the point where you start to hallucinate, thinking that dog walking with its owners is actually yours, in disguise.
5. Vacation Preoccupation
If you're one of the lucky ones headed for a warmer destination, your thoughts are preoccupied with your fabulous trip and only your fabulous trip. Your Pinterest is rife with possible bathing suits and sundresses, and you spend your days scrolling through the resort's website, researching possible restaurants to eat at and places to visit. You plan and re-plan the week's schedule, and spend way more time daydreaming about the beaches than actually focusing on the task at hand (your homework).
6. Mo' Money, Fewer Problems
College teaches you a lot of things, and one of those things is that you have no money. Food costs money, laundry costs money, your existence basically has a price tag on it, and while you can feel good about being worth so much, having to pay for it sucks. When you come home, a lot of that expense is gone. Relatives take you to dinner or slip you money and typically your parents pay for other expenses you'd otherwise be personally responsible for. That week of being flushed with cash is a magical escape from the typical budgeting just to buy a Big Mac. While having adult responsibilities like having to budget is great practice for adulthood, coming home and not having to worry about yourself for a bit is nice.
7. Ready for Reunions
As much as you love your friends at college, you miss the people you grew up with. The weeks spent apart have been brutal, and you can't wait to get back together and reminisce or catch up. You find yourself posting countless #tbts on Instagram, or scrolling through Facebook memories in your excitement to see your besties from back home.
8. Adios, Alarm
Nothing breaks your heart more than setting that 8 A.M. alarm after a late night of studying, but that sweet relief you feel when you switch it off for a week is almost addicting. A week of sleeping in with no beeping or buzzing to jolt you from a night's sleep so brief, it really should be downgraded to a nap is right around the corner for you. The frustration of each early morning gets older and older, and you cannot wait for that final Friday when you switch it off for good.
Spring break, here we come!
